Massive Junctions Planned on Regional Ring Road

Massive Interchange Junctions Planned on Telangana’s Regional Ring Road

Hyderabad – The upcoming Regional Ring Road (RRR) project around Hyderabad will include 11 major interchanges, with two of the biggest junctions planned near Sangareddy and Choutuppal. These interchanges are designed to support heavy traffic flow where the RRR crosses major national highways—Hyderabad–Pune near Sangareddy (at Girmapur) and Hyderabad–Vijayawada near Choutuppal.

Key Highlights:
  • * Each interchange will span up to 150 acres and stretch about3 kmin length.
  • * The "Extended Dumbbell"design has been chosen for Sangareddy and Choutuppal interchanges—modeled after Delhi’s Outer Ring Road interchanges.
  • * The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is leading the design and construction efforts.

Why the "Extended Dumbbell" Design?
This design enables smooth traffic movement between national highways and the RRR with minimum land acquisition. About 70% of the land needed is already part of the RRR’s alignment, while only the remaining 30% will be newly acquired.

The loops in this design begin from a distance of 1.5 km on either side of the junction, giving the interchanges a total length of 3 km—almost double the size of those on Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road.

Construction Timeline and Progress:
  • * Land acquisition is progressing rapidly.
  • * Final designs for all 11 interchanges in the northern section (Sangareddy to Choutuppal via Gajwel—162 km stretch) are completed.
  • * The e tendering process is expected to begin in three months.
  • * The northern and southern segments of the RRR will eventually connect at Sangareddy and Choutuppal.

Design Breakdown of the 11 Interchanges:

  • 1. Sangareddy (Girmapur):
    • * Major ―Extended Dumbbell‖ interchange
    • * Crosses Hyderabad–Pune NH
    • * Designed for high-speed transitions

  • 2. Shivampet:
    • * Crosses NH 161
    • * Will have a Double Dumbbell design

  • 3. Majidpally (Toopran–Gajwel stretch):
    • * Rotary design selected

  • 4. Prajnapur (near Rajiv Rahadari):
    • * Partial Cloverleaf with three loops

  • 5. Peerlapally (Jagdevpur–Turkapally road):
    • * Rotary design

  • 6. Turkapally (towards Yadagirigutta):
    • * Another Rotary interchange

  • 7. Rayagiri (on Hyderabad–Warangal Highway):
    • * Will use a Double Trumpet design

  • 8. Valigonda (Bhuvanagiri–Valigonda Road):
    • * Interchange with undisclosed design (likely rotary or trumpet)

Why These Designs?

Each interchange’s design was selected based on:

  • * Surrounding land availability
  • * Expected traffic volume
  • * Proximity to existing infrastructure

For congested zones like Sangareddy and Choutuppal, the Extended Dumbbell was chosen to minimize land acquisition issues due to nearby residential and commercial structures.

Summary: The Regional Ring Road is set to transform connectivity around Hyderabad. With 11 major junctions carefully designed for future traffic needs, and construction expected to start soon, the RRR will not only ease traffic in the capital but also boost industrial and regional development across Telangana
